On 3rd February, 1915 the 2nd East Yorkshire battalion of 83 Brigade, 28th Division moved from support positions at Chateau Rosendael at Ypres and moved into the front line with battalion HQ at Ferme la Chapelle. During the early morning of the following day, 4th February, the enemy attacked the trenches held by D and B Companies and forced a withdrawal of around 80 yards to support positions. Attempts to retake to lost trenches that evening were unsuccessful as was another attempt on the next evening when, in the darkness, the identity of the trench was mistaken and they found themselves in the German lines. Here they came under heavy rifle fire and were again forced to withdraw after sustaining yet more casualties. William Holme was one of those killed during the fighting.
